CNC Turning Surface Finishes
GSG-Tech offers a variety of surface finishing options for CNC turned parts to enhance both appearance and functional performance. These finishing processes can improve surface smoothness, increase hardness, and provide better corrosion resistance, while also reducing visible machining marks created during CNC turning and secondary operations.
As-Machined

Provides a cost-effective option with visible tool marks, as the surface is left directly from the CNC machine.
Anodizing

Improves corrosion and wear resistance while allowing for color dyeing, ideal for aluminum components.
Polishing

Achieves a high-gloss finish, reducing surface roughness and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the metal.
Sandblasting

Uses pressurized sand or other media to clean and treat the surface, creating a uniform matte finish.
Brushed Finish

Creates a unidirectional fine texture, reducing the visibility of marks and scratches on the surface.
Powder Coating

Provides a thick, durable, and wear-resistant coating with excellent color and texture options for various surfaces.
Electroplating

Bonds a thin metal layer to the part, enhancing wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and surface conductivity.
Black Oxide

A conversion coating for ferrous metals that improves corrosion resistance and minimizes light reflection.
Electropolishing

An electrochemical process that smooths and brightens the surface while significantly improving corrosion resistance.
Alodine

A chromate conversion coating for aluminum that provides corrosion protection and improves paint adhesion.
CNC Turning Design Guidelines
Radii
Recommended minimum internal radius is 0.5 mm. Larger radii (up to 3 mm or more) improve tool contact and reduce stress concentration.
Threads & Tapped Holes
External and internal threads can be precisely cut. Standard sizes from M1.6 and up. Ensure minimum thread length is 1.5x diameter for stability.
Min Wall Thickness
Maintain 0.8 mm for metals and 1.5 mm for plastics to ensure structural integrity during machining.
Text
Engraved characters should be at least 2 mm high and 0.5 mm deep to ensure clarity after machining.
Holes
Minimum hole diameter is 0.5 mm. For deep holes, maintain a 1:10 diameter-to-depth ratio to avoid tool deflection.
Tolerances for CNC Turning
We machine CNC lathe parts to meet strict tolerance requirements. Depending on your design, our CNC lathes can achieve tolerances as tight as ±0.005 mm. Standard tolerances are ISO 2768-m for metals and ISO 2768-c for plastics.
Max Part Size
Typically up to 500 mm in diameter and 1500 mm in length, but larger sizes can be accommodated with specialized equipment.
Min Part Size
Minimum diameter down to 1 mm, depending on material and setup.
General Tolerance
Standard is ±0.01 mm; tighter tolerances down to ±0.005 mm are possible depending on complexity.
Lead Time
Standard lead time is 3-7 days for small batches.
