1. Basic Concept of the MIM Process

Metal Injection Molding, commonly known as MIM, is an advanced metal parts manufacturing process that combines traditional powder metallurgy with plastic injection molding technology.

Simply put, MIM allows metal to be “injection molded” like plastic, making it possible to produce small metal components with complex shapes, high precision, and excellent performance.

MIM is often regarded as one of the most promising metal forming technologies of the 21st century and has been widely used in consumer electronics, medical devices, automotive manufacturing, aerospace, and other industries.

2. Core Process of MIM

The MIM process mainly consists of four key steps:

1. Mixing and Pelletizing

Fine metal powder, usually with a particle size of less than 20 microns, is mixed with thermoplastic binders such as paraffin wax, polypropylene, or polyethylene in a specific ratio. After heating and mixing, the mixture is processed into uniform granular feedstock.

The metal powder usually accounts for 55% to 65% of the total volume.

2. Injection Molding

The feedstock is heated into a molten state and injected into a precision mold cavity using a standard injection molding machine. After cooling, a “green part” is obtained, with a shape close to that of the final component.

This step enables the formation of complex geometries, such as thin walls, threads, grooves, and irregular holes.

3. Debinding

The binder in the green part is removed through heating, solvent extraction, catalytic reaction, or other methods. After debinding, a porous “brown part” composed mainly of metal powder remains.

The debinding process must be precisely controlled to prevent deformation or cracking of the part.

4. Sintering

The brown part is placed in a high-temperature sintering furnace, usually at 70% to 90% of the metal’s melting point, and heated in a protective atmosphere or vacuum environment.

At high temperatures, the metal powder particles diffuse and bond together, eventually forming a dense, high-strength, high-density finished metal component.

After sintering, the part usually shrinks by about 15% to 20%, while maintaining its original shape.

3. Main Advantages of the MIM Process

High geometric complexity:
MIM can produce complex three-dimensional structures that are difficult to manufacture using traditional powder metallurgy or machining.

High material utilization:
As a near-net-shape process, MIM produces very little waste, with material utilization exceeding 95%.

Excellent mechanical properties:
After sintering, the density of MIM parts can reach 95% to 99% of theoretical density, with properties close to forged parts.

High production efficiency:
MIM is suitable for mass production and offers low unit cost at high volumes.

Good dimensional accuracy:
After sintering, tolerances can typically be controlled within ±0.3%, and in some cases within ±0.1%.

Wide material selection:
Applicable materials include stainless steel, iron-based alloys, titanium alloys, tungsten alloys, copper alloys, soft magnetic materials, and more.

4. Limitations of the MIM Process

Not suitable for large parts:
Due to the risk of deformation during debinding and sintering, MIM parts usually weigh no more than 100 grams.

High initial investment:
Mold manufacturing and feedstock development costs are relatively high, making MIM less suitable for small-batch production.

Shrinkage must be precisely controlled:
Different batches of material may have shrinkage variations, placing high demands on mold compensation design.

Limited surface finish:
After sintering, the surface has an original metallic texture. Secondary processing is required if a mirror-like finish is needed.

Missile rudder frames, connector housings, precision guidance components.

5. Hardware Tools

Screwdriver bits, drilling guides, fiber optic connector sleeves.
